It follows, then, that if you do genuinely believe in the resourcefulness of your clients, you will have to find alternatives to giving advice. So the first step to establishing trust is to abandon advice-giving as a coaching tactic.

Unconditional acceptance means that you are curious about the client. You want to know what it is like to walk in his or her shoes. You accept not just the nice bits – that is, the admirable parts, the behaviours that spring from values just like your own, but the parts that are less admirable and of which they may feel ashamed or worried. Most of us grow up learning that acceptance is conditional. Some examples might be that love and acceptance depend on being * * * * nice to people all the time: putting their needs first; quietly spoken and modest; lively and entertaining, always smiling; 100 per cent successful 100 per cent of the time.

Stress your respect for the client and your desire to help. Explain the differences between psychotherapy and coaching; describe how psychotherapy can help. Ask for the client’s reactions. Offer to refer the client to a trusted psychotherapist. Make it clear it is the client’s choice to follow it up. Ideally, offer three possible choices, explaining the general approaches and styles of each therapist. Clarify the boundaries of the future coaching relationship. Keep stressing your support for the client.
